Presidency engages CSOs on women’s health challenges

    By Aderogba George

The Senior Special Assistant to President Bola Tinubu on Women’s Health, Dr Adanna Steinacker, on Thursday met with Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) in Abuja to assess challenges women face in accessing healthcare.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the meeting was the third in February.

Steinacker had earlier engaged the Medical Women Association of Nigeria (MWAN) on Feb. 6, and the Coalition of Women Leaders, women’s groups and NGOs on Feb. 10.

Steinacker said highlighting women’s health is a national priority.

She explained that engaging professional associations and CSOs helps her office understand issues at the sub-national and grassroots levels.

“It is very key to invite these groups to understand policy alignment from my office, resource mobilisation, where to channel resources, and how other initiatives should work in terms of women’s health,” she said.

She noted that recurring themes from the meetings include maternal health, sexual and reproductive health and rights, menstrual hygiene, access to family planning commodities, health education, and mental health.

“I can tell you that maternal health still remains a challenge in Nigeria. Women from different organisations are sharing lived experiences from their communities.

“Reducing maternal mortality remains a priority,” Steinacker said.

She added that education should be accessible and adapted to local languages and contexts, and stressed that mental health advocacy remains urgently needed.

Steinacker emphasised the importance of targeting underserved and vulnerable populations, describing them as the groups that need health resources and services the most.

She said her office would continue engaging stakeholders to deepen understanding of women’s health challenges, adding that communication channels with CSOs had been opened, leveraging digital platforms to improve efficiency.

The SSA also announced plans to create a technical working group, with many CSOs volunteering to help implement the issues raised during the meetings.

She thanked President Tinubu for establishing the office dedicated to women’s health issues.

Earlier, Dr Mohammed Lecky, Chairman of the Health Sector Reform Coalition, highlighted challenges in the health sector affecting women.

He said delayed health financing and low awareness of health insurance exacerbate difficulties for women, urging the SSA’s office to champion health insurance enrollment for women.

Lecky also called for direct engagement with women in rural areas to better understand and amplify their health concerns, especially with elections approaching.

Speaking on women’s reproductive health and rights, Bunmi Dipo-Salami, Executive Director of Baobab for Women’s Human Rights, said many women remain unaware of their rights and lack access to information and services.

“We do not have adequate service providers for women’s reproductive health. In some hospitals, male staff attend to women’s health, highlighting a gap.

“Agencies work in silos, the Ministry of Health is not coordinating with the Ministry of Women Affairs or other relevant bodies,” she said.

Dipo-Salami added that in some communities, reproductive health services are unavailable or culturally restricted, with men sometimes preventing women from accessing care.

“These gaps must be addressed to ensure women’s health and rights are fully protected,” she added. (NAN)

  • FG takes salt intake reduction awareness to Lagos to reduce hypertension

FG takes salt intake reduction awareness to Lagos to reduce hypertension

    By Lilian Okoro

The Federal Government is leading a nationwide push to cut excessive salt intake, blaming its high consumption for rising cardiovascular disease in the country.

Mr Victor Osuagwu, Scientific Officer at the Department of Food and Drug Services of the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare,  spoke during an outreach programme at Oke Arin Market in Lagos on Wednesday.

The programme, in partnership with the Centre for Communication and Social Impact (CCSI),  combined grassroots market activations with social media engagement to address what he described as a silent public health crisis.

“We are trying to create awareness to public on what the Federal Ministry of Health is doing on the initiative that we are taking in trying to reduce salt.

“We are also making people aware of the dangers of excessive salt intake.”

He lamented that  many Nigerians did not even read the labels of the things they bought, however, he was optimistic that with education and sensitisation, changing behaviour would be gradual.

“We are trying to do it step by step, until every Nigerian is aware.”

Also, Dr Olawale Ogulana, a medical doctor, health advocate and brand ambassador for CCSI, stressed the need to cut  dependence on high-sodium seasoning cubes.

He also linked it to the  rising hypertension rates in the country.

He  urged households to return to traditional cooking methods and natural spices such as ginger, garlic and onions.

He warned that the growing preference for quick meals was eroding healthier culinary traditions.

“As a medical doctor, I will encourage using natural spices in your meals.

“We are not saying that your meals should not be tasty, but it shouldn’t be with high levels of sodium, because that in itself will put us at risk”.

He noted that excessive salt consumption was putting millions of Nigerians at risk of hypertension, stroke and kidney damage, urging citizens to monitor their daily intake and read food labels carefully.

“Elevated salt consumption is a risk factor for hypertension or high blood pressure,” he said, noting that many people were unaware of the World Health Organisation’s recommendation of no more than five grams of salt a day, about a teaspoon.

Ms Anna White-Agbo, Media and Programme Officer at CCSI, explained that tailored communication and social media outreach were part of the campaign strategies to drive the messages to the grassroots on different health programmes and shift public behaviour on health.

She noted that the campaign had been running for over a year, “driving it majorly on social media’’.

However, she said that there were new communication products from the event to be duplicated on diverse platforms.

“In Lagos, the goal is to record health advice for at least 500 people, with a stretch target of 1,000.

“If God willing, and I have enough time, I don’t mind hitting 1,000 records” she said.(NAN)www.nannews.ng

  • Tinubu directs sports funding reset from 2026

Tinubu directs sports funding reset from 2026

    By Muhyideen Jimoh

President Bola Tinubu has approved a comprehensive reset of sports funding in Nigeria, directing economic management authorities to ensure adequate and timely financing from the 2026 fiscal year.

The president announced the policy in a message posted on his verified X handle, describing sports as one of Nigeria’s strongest national brands and an instrument for unity and international visibility.

He directed that annual budgetary allocations for sports infrastructure, programmes, events and international competitions be provided and released immediately after budget passage and assent.

Tinubu also ordered a review of allocations for sporting activities currently spread across Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs).

He directed that such allocations be restructured and streamlined, with savings transferred into a unified funding framework under the National Sports Commission (NSC).

“In 2025, from individual champions in athletics and other sports, to our winning female football and basketball teams as well as the Super Eagles, scores of athletes representing Nigeria made our nation proud.

“Sports is one of our strongest brands as a nation. It unifies us, breaks all our fault lines, inspires belief, and builds a sense of community that cuts across age, language, ethnicity, religion, and social status.

“I have therefore approved and directed the relevant ministries of Finance, Budget and Economic Planning and the Budget Office of the Federation for the resetting of sports funding.

”This is to ensure that henceforth as from the 2026 fiscal year, adequate provisions are made annually in the national budget.

“Nigerian athletes deserve certainty, not excuses,” he said.

The president said the reforms were anchored on the Renewed Hope Initiative for Nigeria’s Sports Economy (RHINSE), which positions sports as a strategic driver of job creation, tourism development, private investment and Nigeria’s global influence.

“These reforms are anchored on the Renewed Hope Initiative for Nigeria’s Sports Economy, RHINSE, which positions sports as a driver for job creation, tourism, investment, and global influence.

“Indeed, sports is our national asset and thus must be administered, managed, and funded in alignment with its special nature and demands, devoid of any bureaucratic bottlenecks,” he added.

Tinubu said his administration was building a functional sports ecosystem through scientific elite athlete development, expanded grassroots participation, revitalised federations and the hosting of major international events at home.

He recalled Nigeria’s sporting achievements in 2025, including successes recorded by athletes across various disciplines.

The president cited individual champions in athletics, the women’s football and basketball teams, and the Super Eagles, who won bronze at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

He also disclosed that Nigeria won a cumulative 373 medals across different sports in 2025.

According to him, the feat shows that when talent is supported with structure and preparation, athletes deliver on continental and global stages.

The President commended the NSC for its progress in spite of prevailing challenges.

He also praised the leadership of the commission under its Chairman, Malam Shehu Dikko, for driving reforms to reset, refocus and relaunch the sector.

Tinubu acknowledged longstanding challenges in sports administration, including bureaucratic delays, fragmented funding structures and late release of funds.

He said the shortcomings undermined athletes’ preparation and performance, and placed them at a disadvantage.

The President also decried inadequate investment in sports infrastructure that meets international benchmarks.

He assured Nigerians that the future of sports would be properly planned, adequately funded and globally competitive.

“Nigeria will continue to win, with pride,” Tinubu said. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

Super Eagles: Gusau reaffirms confidence in Chelle amid transfer speculation

    By Victor Okoye

Ibrahim Gusau, President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), has reaffirmed confidence in Super Eagles Head Coach, Eric Chelle, amid reported external interest.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Chelle drew attention following the Super Eagles’ impressive performance at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.

Gusau told NAN on Wednesday in Abuja that the Malian tactician remains under contract and fully committed to Nigeria’s football project.

According to him, the federation is focused on maintaining stability within the national team set-up.

“We have a binding contract with Eric and we expect full respect for that agreement. Stability is crucial for our progress.

“Chelle’s priority is building a competitive squad capable of success in major tournaments.

“The federation will continue to support the coach in consolidating the team’s recent gains,” he said.

Gusau dismissed suggestions that financial offers elsewhere could lure the coach away from the Super Eagles.

“It is not about money. For any serious coach, achievement, legacy and the right environment to succeed are paramount.

“Chelle strongly believes in the Super Eagles’ potential to dominate African football and compete globally.

“He is convinced he can accomplish his professional ambitions with Nigeria,” Gusau said.

Gusau credited Chelle’s leadership for the team’s improved tactical identity and attacking intensity at the 2025 AFCON.

“We saw tactical discipline, attacking purpose and resilience. The statistics speak for themselves.

“The Super Eagles finished as the tournament’s highest-scoring team and were unbeaten in regulation time, losing only on penalties to the hosts.

“That performance reflects growth. We are building something solid and sustainable,” he said.

He acknowledged the Federal Government’s support through the National Sports Commission, describing collaboration as vital to progress.

“When institutions align behind a common goal, success becomes achievable. This partnership has strengthened our structure,” Gusau noted.

The NFF boss assured Nigerians that more young talents would be integrated into the squad during upcoming international windows.

He said planned November friendlies were disrupted by World Cup play-off commitments but preparations remain on course.

“We discovered exciting young players and more are on the way.

“Our priority was the play-offs, but we remain committed to exposing new players at the right time. The March window offers fresh opportunities,” he said.

He urged Nigerians to remain optimistic about the team’s future under Chelle.

“This is just the beginning. Nigerians should expect greater performances from the Super Eagles,” Gusau said. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

The event is scheduled to hold from May 2 to May 3 in Botswana.

The historic appointment makes Nesiama the first Nigerian ever to be entrusted with a refereeing role at the World Athletics Relays, one of the most prestigious competitions on the World Athletics calendar.

His engagement was confirmed in a formal communication from the Local Organising Committee of the World Athletics Relays Gaborone 2026 and made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Thursday.

    By Victor Okoye

Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) will make history at the 15th Biennial Police Games (BIPOGA), Asaba 2026, as it features for the first time as a fully recognised and scoring sport.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the landmark development marks a major breakthrough for combat sports in Nigeria, positioning the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) at the forefront of structured MMA development.

From a demonstration event at the 14th edition, MMA has now evolved into a medal-contending competition under a regulated, safety-driven framework—creating formal pathways for athletes, coaches and officials within the Force.

Chairman of the Nigeria Police Mixed Martial Arts Association and Board member of the Nigeria MMA Federation, CSP Kalu  Erem, described the inclusion as a historic and defining moment for the sport’s growth nationwide.

Kalu said the Inspetor-General of Police (I-G) Mr  Kayode  Egbetokun, had consistently demonstrated commitment to developing MMA within the Force and Nationwide.

“From supporting outstanding Police MMA Athletes like Cpl Juliet Chukwu, Cpl Juliet Ukah and Cpl Bernard Ewah, the I-G has shown visionary leadership in combat sports development,” he said.

According to him,the journey began with the Egbetokun hosting the first I-G Open National MMA Championship in Abuja from Dec.1 to 4 ,2023 at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium.

According to him, this  followed with a demonstration event at the 14th BIPOGA and has now evolved into a fully scoring competitive tournament.

“Asaba 2026 marks the first time not just at the Police Games but at any other National Sporting festival in Nigeria’s very rich MMA history that the sport is officially scored amongst different other sporting events,” he said.

Kalu, who is a member of the Nigeria Olympic Technical Commission,  noted that the Nigeria Police Force had become a preeminent example of structured sports development in the country.

“The Nigeria Police Force  is setting the pace. This initiative reflects global best practices in governance, athlete welfare, and technical certification,” he said.

Kalu, who is also a member of the Nigeria Police Force Sports Planning Committee, said  that the I-G’s trailblazing support had created credible opportunities for officers to compete nationally and internationally.

“This is how sustainable sports ecosystems are built—through leadership, regulation, and deliberate investment in people.

“The 15th BIPOGA in Asaba thus stands as a defining moment for Nigerian MMA and institutional sports excellence,” Kalu said.

The Games, with the theme “Beyond the Badge: Excellence in Action” with the slogan “Discipline, Dignity and Dedication,” was  declared open by President Tinubu, who was represented by the Minister of Defence, Gen. Christopher Musa (Rtd).

  • Ministers seek industrial unity as NLNG wins 2026 NOGIG Games

Ministers seek industrial unity as NLNG wins 2026 NOGIG Games

    By Emmanuel Afonne

The 20th edition of the Nigeria Oil and Gas Industry Games (NOGIG) ended on a triumphant note as Team NLNG emerged overall champions with an impressive haul of 20 gold to top the medals table.

The team in addition had 16 silver and 16 bronze medals, as NNPC Ltd. won 14 gold, 15 silver and 20 bronze to finish on the second place, while Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board finished third with five gold, eight silver and five bronze.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the win reinforced NLNG dominance at the landmark sporting event that had become a symbol of unity across the petroleum value chain.

The Minister of State for Petroleum (Oil), Heineken Lokpobiri, underscored the deeper significance of the Games beyond medals and trophies.

“Four decades of cohesion with this 20th edition is “a remarkable milestone,” he said.

The Minister of State for Petroleum (Gas), Ekperikpe Ekpo, on his part said the Games reflected over four decades of unity, friendship and collaboration within one of Nigeria’s most strategic industries.

The ministers commended the organisers, sponsors and participants for sustaining a “noble initiative” that had grown beyond a mere sporting competition into a powerful platform for cohesion, wellness and shared purpose across the oil and gas ecosystem.

“In an industry as vast and technically demanding as ours, platforms like NOGIG remind us that beyond policies, projects and procurement targets, it is people who drive the process,” Ekpo said.

According to him, the healthy competition, teamwork, discipline and excellence displayed over the past few days, mirror the very foundations upon which Nigeria’s oil and gas industry is built.

The minister linked the spirit of the Games to the ongoing transformation within the petroleum sector, driven by reforms, innovation and a collective commitment to transparency, efficiency and value creation.

He emphasised that a productive workforce must also be a healthy one, noting that initiatives such as NOGIG has helped to promote physical well-being, mental resilience and work-life balance.

These, the minister said, were the critical ingredients for operational excellence and safety in a demanding energy environment.

He added,“As we celebrate athletic excellence today, we must recognise that the same teamwork and resilience displayed on the field are essential to achieving our national energy objectives.

“This 20th edition reflects consistency, institutional support and a shared belief that collaboration remains one of the industry’s greatest strengths.”

Speaking after the victory, the General Manager, Production, NLNG, Nnamdi Anowi, described the triumph as a testament not just to athletic preparation but to teamwork and resilience.

“Even if we won by one gold, we are the champions.”

Beyond the medals, Anowi highlighted the value of networking and collaboration fostered by the Games.

“We are busy making connections, talking with people, building those networks we need in the industry.

“NOGIG has boosted collaboration, and the industry will come out better and stronger,” he added.

The last day of events saw keenly contested football final, as the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) defeated NLNG by a lone goal to lift the trophy.

The third-place match was equally dramatic, with Oando edging NNPC Ltd. 5–3 on penalties after a goalless draw at full time.

The football showpiece drew loud cheers from supporters and further exemplified the spirit of sportsmanship that defined the week-long event.

NAN also reports that trophies and medals were given to the winning teams in all the categories of sports.
